Search engine optimisation is the practice of making a site crawlable, understandable and worth ranking for the questions a business wants to be found for. It operates at the level of the page and the site, which is what distinguishes it from the entity-level work of generative engine optimisation.

The mechanism has not fundamentally changed. A search engine must be able to reach a page, parse it, understand what question it answers, and have some reason to trust the source. Failures usually occur at the first or the last of those, and rarely in the middle.

What SEO cannot do

SEO cannot create demand that does not exist. Where nobody is searching for the category, ranking first for it returns very little, and the honest answer is that the budget belongs somewhere that creates awareness instead.

It also cannot compensate for a weak offer. Search delivers people who were already looking; what happens when they arrive is a function of the proposition, the evidence on the page and how easy it is to make contact. A programme that lifts rankings and changes nothing commercially has usually run into that wall rather than a technical one.

How long before SEO shows results?

Usually two to six months for meaningful movement, longer in competitive commercial categories. New pages on an established site can rank within weeks. A new domain has to accumulate crawl history and external references before ranking becomes possible at all. Anyone promising faster is describing paid search, not organic.

Is SEO still relevant now that people ask AI assistants?

Yes, and for a mechanical reason. Assistants retrieve from the open web, and a page that search engines cannot crawl, parse or trust is unlikely to be retrieved by the systems that build answers either. SEO does not cover everything AI visibility needs, but the sites that do well in AI answers are almost never the sites that were invisible in search.

What does technical SEO involve?

Crawlability and indexation, site architecture and URL structure, page performance, mobile rendering, structured data, canonical handling, and the elimination of duplicate or thin pages. It is largely a hygiene exercise. Done once properly and maintained, it stops being the constraint.

How important are backlinks?

External references still carry weight as evidence that other people find a source worth citing. What has changed is that volume without relevance does very little, and purchased link networks carry real risk. Earning references through material worth referencing is slower and does not stop working.

How should SEO be measured?

By non-branded organic sessions to commercially relevant pages, by rankings for the query set that actually matters, and by what those sessions do next. Total traffic is a poor measure because it rises comfortably on queries that will never buy anything.
